A message from VASC President Katie Baird

Greetings! I hope this letter finds you well. VASC has been very busy in the last few months with professional development offerings and preparing for the VCA Annual Convention, both of which were HUGE successes! Here are some of the highlights from the VCA convention:

  • 18 presentations by VASC members!
  • Breakfast Meet &Greet and Keynote with Joe Wharff, School Counseling Connections Specialist at VDOE! Keynote was titled: School Counseling with 2020 Vision
  • Shared social with Lynchburg Area Counselors Association (LACA) on Thursday evening!

What a wonderful opportunity Convention was to catch up with friends old and new; to learn more about the counseling profession; and, to connect with counselors from various workplaces across the state.

Earlier this fall, VASC sponsored several professional development opportunities in Southwest Virginia. Workshops were offered on the following topics: Helping Students Cope with Grief &Loss, Thinking Outside the Box to Prevent Bullying, Mindfulness in Schools, Play Therapy in Schools, The Impact of Adversity on Children &Adolescents, and, School Counseling &Technology. These workshops were well attended and counselors learned many wonderful strategies to inform their work with children and families!

Looking ahead, VASC is committed to working with counselors to provide more professional development opportunities around the state and to advocate for school counselors and clinical counselors working with children &adolescents. Please join us in Richmond for VCA Legislative Day on January 26, 2016. VASC plans to work with Joe Wharff to provide a mini-convention for school counseling professionals in the spring. VASC also has plans to help sponsor workshops in the Lynchburg area (best practices for working with LGBTQIQA youth) and the Gloucester area (screening for risk to self and others in K-12 settings) of the state this spring

Keep an eye on your email account for those opportunities! We would love to hear from YOU what topics are relevant to you and how VASC can provide meaningful trainings close to where you are. Please feel free to contact Katie Baird at vasc.vca@gmail.com with ideas and suggestions, and if you are interested in joining the VASC leadership team! If you are not already a VASC member, becoming a VASC member is simple and cost-effective.
