This full-day training event will address the needs, concerns, and questions of those who wish to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for gender diverse youth and young adults, including those who identify as transgender, gender non-conforming, genderqueer, gender fluid, non-binary, and questioning. The presenter will provide an introduction to gender diversity, discuss areas of competence for working with gender diverse youth, factors supporting resilience, clinical and ethical considerations, and facilitate supportive dialogue about practical implications in educational settings. The interactive workshop will include case scenarios, self-reflective activities, and collaborative discussions regarding systemic challenges to supporting gender diverse youth in schools and universities. Resources and referral information will be provided.
About the presenter: Laura Boyd Farmer, PhD, LPC, ACS is the Immediate Past-President of the Virginia Association for LGBT Issues in Counseling (VA-ALGBTIC), the newest division of VCA. Dr. Farmer is a Licensed Professional Counselor and faculty member in Counselor Education at Virginia Tech. Her research focuses on LGBTQ-affirming counseling practices. She facilitates a peer-based support group for LGBTQ+ youth in the Roanoke Valley.
